 Internship Program


We mentor our interns in providing the dignity of live classical music to underserved and marginalized populations, all aspects of nonprofit and arts administration, and the responsibility of twenty-first century artists to be both socially responsible and entrepreneurial.  For more information about our internships: info@sheltermusicboston.org
2022 Interns

​Nuala Imrie is a flautist from Ireland, currently in her last year of studying for her undergraduate degree in Flute Performance from the Boston Conservatory. She began interning with Shelter Music Boston in May 2022 and is continuing until December 2022, mainly focusing on social media and content creation. Nuala is always inspired by the work that SMB does!

​Emma Robertson
is a soprano living in Boston, MA. Originally from Marietta, GA, she obtained her bachelors degree in Music Performance from the University of Georgia in 2020. She moved up to Boston that summer to attend the New England Conservatory of Music, from which she now holds a master degree in Vocal Perform
ance. Having traveled and performed in places around the United States and Europe, Emma’s home base is here in Boston. This upcoming year, she will continue being the soprano staff singer at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Back Bay, as well as a chorus member with the Boston Lyric Opera. Emma first came across Shelter Music Boston when she first moved up, and she is thrilled to be a part of this incredible organization!

​Samuel Sanders, a classical violinist, aims to bridge the gap between audiences of Classical and Contemporary styles. Sanders specializes in duos with piano, orchestral works from the Twentieth and Twenty-first Centuries, and dabbles in jazz and bluegrass-folk. Sam is studying for their masters degree in violin from Longy School of Music

2020 Interns

With a passion for creative problem solving, making music available and accessible to all kinds of audiences, and arts administration, violinist Sarah Zahorodni puts her whole heart into every artistic endeavor she pursues. Her holistic approach to the fine arts, strong interest in collaboration, and love for chamber music, both as a violinist and violist, has led to performanes in local communities as well as Ukraine, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Italy. Sarah was a graduate student earning a Master of Music degree at Boston Conservatory while an intern for SMB.

​Katie Steele was thrilled to work with Shelter Music Boston for a second summer when a rising junior at the State University of New York at Fredonia studying Arts Administration and Voice Performance. She is working to build a career in classical music and social innovation.

​​Anna Harris is a graduate of Boston University with a violin performance with a minor in English. She is passionate about the intersection of art and society as well as the benefit that the arts can have on the mental health of marginalized individuals. With the experience gained from her time at SMB, she hopes to continue working as an administrator in the nonprofit arts sector.

​Katie Steele, soprano, was a rising sophomore at SUNY Fredonia studying Voice Performance with minors in Arts Administration and French. She believes strongly in music’s ability to inspire social change and to improve peoples’ mindsets. Besides interning with Shelter Music Boston, she spent the summer of 2019 working with youth at Sarasota Opera and Opera Maine. ​

​Amogh Agarwal from Dehradun, India, was an undergraduate student at Berklee College Of Music during his SMB internship. He believes in the power of music to promote love, harmony and happiness. Though his education at Berklee, he wants to grow the music scene in his country and create more awareness and respect.

Jason Russo studied clarinet at the Boston Conservatory, and has always had a passion for using music for social justice, change, and healing. He is glad to have connected with an organization that cares deeply about making a difference, where he has collaborated, shared ideas, and made positive change.


2015 Interns

C.J. David, is a tenor who has always had a passion for using social media to instigate change and is glad to have connected with a Boston organization that uses music to improve people's lives. He is a graduate of the Master of Music degree in opera performance at the Longy School of Music of Bard College, in Cambridge.
Jennifer Madrigal, voice and guitar, a graduate of Berklee College of Music where she studied Music Business and Music Therapy. She is passionate about using music to build community and to read inside those who are trapped in their medical conditions. One day she hopes to start her own music therapy practice.

Rebecca Miller, viola, is a graduate of The Boston Conservatory, and following her internship became the first administrative assistant at Shelter Music Boston! She studied primarily classical performance and now hopes to explore jazz, improvisation, and fiddle music. She also hopes to found a professional chamber music ensemble.  

2014 Interns
Courtney Chang, violin, has a Bachelor's Degree in Violin Performance from Boston University College of Fine Arts.  Following her 2014 internship with SMB she added a concentration in Arts Leadership to her course of study at Boston University.

Lisa Fujita, violin, New England Conservatory is a 2015 NEC graduate.  While at NEC, she worked at the  Preparatory School and learned to love working with young students.  Lisa successfully wrestled with SMB tech challenges and we look forward to staying connected.
Marissa Chaffee, flute, is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and has long been passionate about service to others.  She has made numerous trips to far flung spots in the Caribbean to assist with house building and other service activities.  Following her internship with SMB, Marissa focused her studies on Public Health and looks forward to incorporating music into her work in this field.
